04 Jun JUNE IS DAIRY MONTH
“WHEN YOU GROW UP ON A DAIRY FARM,
COWS DON’T TAKE A DAY OFF. SO YOU WORK
EVERYDAY AND MY DAD ALWAYS SAID
‘NO ONE CAN OUT WORK YOU.”
I always like to find a saying from someone who is quoted because of the status they have achieved in our society. I go to a site that lists thousands of says on thousands of subjects.
Well I want to say something good about June Dairy Month. My family on both sides were dairy farmers. Dad milked and showed Guernsey cattle and Mom’s family milked Holstein. I was raised on raw Golden Guernsey milk.
Mom wore out a mixer making butter from the rich and golden colored cream and there is nothing in the world like homemade ice cream from the Guernsey cows.
When I went to the site I found a lot of people who do not know squat about health and had nothing but bad things to say about dairy. So I had to look hard to find this saying from someone who knew how to work and got his ethic from the dairy farm he grew up on. I wager that Coach Summitt is a lot healthier than the other ‘celebrities’ that are telling you what to eat and not eat.
With out using my whole space to dispute all the ridiculous claims I want to get back to where I started. JUNE IS DAIRY MONTH. This promotion that has been going on since I was hatched and is a reminder that good health is connected to a good balanced diet.
The one thing that I have been wondering about for many years is that with the new health crazes and the fact that butterfat is again being valued in milk, why is the Golden Guernsey milk not becoming popular in the back to the land groups?
In mainline dairy herds you will find that Jersey cattle are being added to the group to get the percentage of butterfat up. You will find the breeds like Ayrshire, Brown Swiss, and Jersey breeds are very popular with the cheese makers.
So why is the Guernsey breed fading away? I don’t know. The magazine that caters to the dairy industry ‘Hoard’s Dairyman’ still owns their own herd of Guernseys.
The Golden color of the Guernsey breeds milk is because it is the only breed that produces natural Beta Carotene. It is healthier than any of the other breeds. I guess just as flavorless tomatoes are sold in stores because each one has to be perfect. And beef is aged basically for a few hours rather than for weeks is because the steaks don’t look as good. Age the steak properly and it may not look as good but it will melt in your mouth. As a consumer you have listened and believed a bunch of over educated and opinionated people who wouldn’t know a good steak, or glass of milk, if the tasted one.
Anything that a processing plant takes out of your food is replaced with a bunch of chemicals. Margarine was created for turkey feed and it killed the turkeys. So what do you do with something like this? Feed it to people. It is only one molecule from plastic. And this is healthy?
Milk is not produced by soybeans or almonds. A bit of the nut or bean is processed out to a powder and a lot of stuff is added to it including mostly water. And they don’t taste good either.
If you want to start getting healthy, start by using real whole products.
At the end of the Indianapolis 500 they are drinking whole milk and not some creation from a lab somewhere.
If there was a Guernsey dairy anywhere close to me I would buy raw milk from them. And I bet my health would be better. So go out and have a nice glass of whole milk and have a homemade cookie with it and celebrate June Dairy Month.
